Synopsis
Dramatists Play Service published Pearl Cleage’s first play, Flyin West in 1995. The entire play reiterates the lives of individuals who participated in the Homestead Act of 1862, giving all Americans, including freed slaves the freedom to own acres of land. The play is set in 1898 in a predominately black town known as Nicodemus, Kansas. Flyin West reveals the journey of six female pioneers who have faced brutality and oppression in South and have resettled to the West, to live a more substantial life that would allow them to become independent and industrious women.
